WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg community would like to congratulate UWinnipeg’s Dr. Trish Salah (Assistant Professor Women’s & Gender Studies, Faculty of Arts) for earning the Lambda Literary Award in the category of transgender fiction – or a “Lammy,” as they are affectionately known, for her book Wanting in Arabic. The award winners were announced in New York City, NY earlier this week.
The Lammys, recognize the best lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender books of the previous year. The prizes are sponsored by the nonprofit Lambda Literary Foundation, a legacy of Washington’s Lambda Rising Bookstore, which closed in 2010.
“On behalf of the Faculty, I’d like to acknowledge Dr. Salah for her accomplishment,” expressed Dr. Glenn Moulaison, Dean of Arts. “As one of only two Canadian Lambda recipients, she brings a great honour to the University of Winnipeg.”
Salah was announced as a finalist for the Lammys by the Lambda Literary Foundation (LLF) in Los Angeles after reviewing a record 746 submissions from 352 publishers last March. Submissions came from major mainstream publishers and from academic presses, from both long-established and new LGBT publishers, as well as from emerging publish-on-demand technologies.
More than 90 literary professionals, including booksellers, book reviewers, librarians, authors, and previous Lammy winners and finalists volunteered countless hours of reading, critical thinking, and invigorating discussion to select the finalists in 24 categories.
