Join in the fun Saturday, May 7, everyone welcome

The University of Winnipeg, in partnership with the University of Manitoba, is eagerly participating in the Science Rendezvous festival being held this year on Saturday, May 07, 2016 from 11:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the University of Manitoba’s Engineering & Information Technology Complex on the Fort Garry campus, 75 Chancellors Circle.

Everyone is welcome and activities are free!

Join us as we create a house of fun and wonder. This family-friendly festival celebrating science is held simultaneously across the country since 2008. This year, faculty and students will be featuring fun activities that will let visitors play with sound, realize the importance of the human thumb, try the newest computer programs, learn how animals communicate in the wild, fire a smoke cannon, see why the Red River has so many bends in it, visualize the danger of concussions, strategize how to increase their chances of winning “Let’s Make a Deal”, try their hand at mapping the constellations, and watch an amazing Science “magic” show.

“I believe it is important to break down the barriers to learning science with events like Science Rendezvous because many children grow up to believe that science isn’t for them or it is too intimidating and hard. When they get to experience the fun and informative hands on demonstrations, their minds shift to believing they can continue on to a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and as a community, we all benefit. At Science Rendezvous, people come in contact with volunteers who range from undergraduate students, all the way up to experts in their respective fields who can’t wait to answer questions and open the doors to the innovative world of science. “

Julia Piche is a 5th year student taking a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biochemistry and Bachelor of Business and Administration.

“Science is all about being able to understand how we can inform, impact and interact with the environment in our daily lives and to always ask questions and look for answers to those questions. As citizens of this planet we have a right and an obligation to be informed and to be literate about the connection that we have with our environment and how our choices on a daily basis have an impact on our planet and our future. Getting kids engaged is important to create a passion for learning, the ability to question “why” something is that way and to seek informed answers. Science is all about active learning.”

Adrienne Ducharme is currently finishing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Geography, and will be starting a Masters in Science, in Bioscience, Technology and Public Policy, in May 2016 at the University of Winnipeg.
