The Golden Carrot Awards are given annually by Food Matters Manitoba to celebrate and honour community food champions who are working hard to create a just and sustainable food system in Manitoba.
UWinnipeg’s Chef Ben Kramer was this year’s Golden Carrot Distinctive Honouree. Kramer is nationally recognized for his talents as an epicurean artist and for his ethos. He is known among his peers to be an outspoken advocate for using local sustainable food.
“It’s quite an honour to be recognized by a group of individuals who are actually effecting change rather then just talking about it,” expressed Kramer.
Kramer brings an accomplished restaurant background and a life-time passion for the food industry to UWinnipeg’s Diversity team. Consistent with Diversity’s kitchen philosophy, Kramer cooks with as many local, organically grown ingredients as possible. Considered one of the best chefs in Canada, his decisions reflect a firm commitment to eco-friendly practices. Having spent many hours teaching and training others in the food industry, Kramer has helped open several restaurants in Western Canada. He has made contributions to various national and regional books, magazines and publications and and Western Living Magazine’s Fall 2009 edition named him one of the “Top 40 Foodies Under 40”.
