WINNIPEG, MB – The Community Foundations of Canada (CFC), the Rideau Hall Foundation (RHF) and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) announced today that The University of Winnipeg has been awarded a highly competitive grant of $825,000 to establish a scholarship program designed to develop global citizens through enriched academic, professional, and cross-cultural experiences. The scholarship was created with support from the federal government and from the private and public sectors in honour of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne.
Through the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships program, UWinnipeg will contribute to the development of dynamic young leaders creating lasting impacts both at home and across the Commonwealth. Additionally, the program aims to enrich students’ academic experiences and to facilitate personal and professional growth by offering them opportunities to collaborate and deepen peer relationships with other Queen Elizabeth scholars, both locally and nationally.
“UWinnipeg currently has more than 450 students enrolled in our graduate programs, ranging from arts to science to Indigenous governance. Our programs offer our students a uniquely multidisciplinary approach and strong research opportunities,” said Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg. “This significant new source of academic and financial support will allow many of those students to broaden their scope of study and share their research and talents at home and abroad.”
Dr. Mavis Reimer, UWinnipeg’s Dean of Graduate Studies, notes that “the design of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships program makes it an ideal fit with the broad objectives of Graduate Studies at The University of Winnipeg, which understands the purpose of advanced academic study as the creation of informed and engaged critical thinkers and collaborative leaders in a range of scholarly and professional disciplines.”
There are several components to the scholarship program. First, scholarships will be awarded to students from Commonwealth countries to pursue graduate study at UWinnipeg. The value of these awards for incoming scholars will range from $25,000 to $30,000 per annum. Second, awards valued at $6,000 will be given to UWinnipeg students for research, scholarships or internships in other Commonwealth countries for a three to six month period.
A unique aspect of this scholarship is the expectation for demonstrations of leadership and community engagement. All Queen Elizabeth scholars will participate in a range of activities designed to allow them to integrate their academic learning with broader cross-cultural experiences.
