Duo movie makers and UWinnipeg alumni Milos Mitrovic and Conor Sweeney are off to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Their film homer_b, will have its world premiere at the 2017 TIFF as a part of the Short Cuts program. The film is co-directed by Sweeney and Mitrovic.
The short film is a series of mysterious home movies chronicling the secret life of the Yellow Family. The film displays a clown delivering a standup routine on a strange, unknown variety show.
“We’re so excited to return to the festival. There’s nowhere we’d rather homer_b make its premiere than TIFF,”said Mitrovic.
homer_b will be screened twice during the festival and will be eligible for the Short Cuts Award for Best Film and the Short Cuts Award for Best Canadian Film.
His previous collaboration with local filmmaking collective, MarkusMilosIanFabian (also made up of UWinnipeg graduates), earned the Windy for best short film, screenplay, and editing for their film, Imitations. This film also won a coveted spot at the 2016 TIFF and their film was part of UWinnipeg’s Gallery 1C03 Moving Images exhibit.
The duo met at UWinnipeg. Sweeney shares, “The UWinnipeg film department incentivized Astron-6 to make some of our first shorts, and is also where I met and formed my creative partnership with Milos.”
Mitrovic shares Sweeney’s sentiment, “The UWinnipeg film department always supported my growth as a filmmaker and my films. Events such as the UWinnipeg Film Festival were pivotal in shaping me to become the filmmaker I am today.”
Sweeney is a founding member of the Canadian filmmaking collective Astron-6. The group’s last feature, The Editor (2014), which Sweeney co-wrote and starred in, premiered at TIFF 2014. He is currently in post-production on the team’s web series Divorced Dad.
Milos Mitrovic was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia. He immigrated to Canada in 1995 as a refugee, settling in the Manitoba prairies. His previous short film Imitations premiered at TIFF and the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2016.
