WINNIPEG, MB – On Friday, October 30, 2009, ex-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) all star players will be at the Duckworth Centre, University of Winnipeg to play against Winnipeg’s best Filipino basketball team. The event will kick off with a preliminary game at 4:00 PM of the two best Filipino basketball teams composed of players selected by Manny Aranez of the Lipenos basketball league. This match will be an opportunity for all players to show their skills and talents before Philippine talent scouts and team coaches.
“The Philippine community in Winnipeg has a strong foundation and affection for sport participation, in particular the game of basketball,” said Doran Reid, Director of Athletics at UWinnipeg. “We currently have a strong relationship with several Philippine Basketball groups in the community including the Manitoba Magic Basketball Club who we partner with in organizing the “International Wesmen Classic”.We also host many training camps and competitions within the Philippine basketball community. The University of Winnipeg is very interested in continuing our partnership with the Philippine basketball community in the hopes that we might attract gifted players and others to play for our Wesmen Athletics teams while completing their academic studies here at UWinnipeg.”
