Existing institutions of global governance are more or less “decisions frozen in time”, created at an historical juncture when sovereign states reigned supreme. Today, those institutions are being forced to operate in a turbulent and complex world in which states and non-state actors compete and jostle for position on the global stage. The problem is that post-World War II institutions of global governance are revealing themselves to be defective, inefficient, ineffective, and largely irrelevant.

Professor W. Andy Knight is former Director of the Institute of International Relations (IIR) at The University of the West Indies and Professor and former Chair of the Department of PoliticalScience at the University of Alberta. He served as a Governor of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) from 2007 to 2012 and was Principal Investigator for a majorSocial Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada grant to study children affected by war. Professor Knight co-edited the journal Global Governance from 2000 to 2005 and was Vice Chair of the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS). He has written extensively on various aspects of multilateralism, global governance andpeace, and United Nations reform.
Prior to the presentation, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, Professor Knight and UWinnipeg Associate Professor Tanya Narozhna will launch their book Female Suicide Bombings: A Critical Gender Approach in 2M70. Everyone welcome.
