Arctic Commission Discusses Report in Toronto

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg and the Walter & Duncan Gordon Foundation are pleased to host a panel discussion on The Shared Future: the final report of the Aspen Institute Commission on Arctic Climate Change in Toronto at The Upper Library, Massey College, (4 Devonshire Place) on Thursday, April 14, 2011 from 11:30 – 1:30 pm. The panel includes:

  • Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President & Vice-Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg, and Aspen Commissioner;
  • Mr. David Monsma, Executive Director of the Energy and Environment Program at the Aspen Institute; and
  • Mr. John Crump, Polar Issues Coordinator, UNEP/GRID-Arendal and Commission Advisor.

Recognizing that the circumpolar Arctic region is experiencing significant ecological change due to global climate change, the Aspen Institute convened a civil society Dialogue and Commission to consider the implications of this impending transformation for the region’s inhabitants and resources. The Aspen Institute has now released the final report and recommendations of Commission, entitled The Shared Future: A Report of the Aspen Institute Commission on

Dr. Axworthy, who served as Canada’s foreign minister from 1996 to 2000, served on the Commission along with a number of other prominent leaders from civil society including Inuit leader Sheila Watt-Cloutier, Prince Albert II of Monaco, Jim Leape of WWF-International, David Lawrence of Shell Oil Company and , Sylvia Earle of National Geographic.

The Aspen Institute mission is twofold: to foster values-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussing and acting on critical issues.
