Aurora Family Therapy Centre Executive Director Marilyn Boyd met the Honourable John Harvard, Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba, at the Government House reception, held to celebrate IMFI’s new name.
Usually discovered by clients through word of mouth, Aurora Family Therapy Centre—formerly the Interfaith Marriage and Family Institute—is a safe and welcoming environment where growth and change happen. The Centre both educates family therapists and offers therapy to families, couples, and individuals on an ability-to-pay basis. Aurora Family Therapy Centre will be having anOpen House from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2005. It’s an opportunity for the Winnipeg community to meet Aurora Family Therapy Centre students and staff. The Open House will take place on the 2nd floor of Sparling Hall.
Aurora Family Therapy Centre debuted its new name on January 1, 2005. According to executive director Marilyn Boyd, the name better reflects the essence of the Centre. “The word ‘Centre’ metaphorically describes our intention to work in a centred way,” she explains. “‘Family Therapy’ is what we teach and what we do. And the word ‘Aurora’ is most immediately associated with the aurora borealis. Moments of aurora splendour are akin to those ‘aha!’ moments in therapy when people connect to their inner core and to one another in a way that invites profound and lasting change.”
The Centre remains true to its original mission: to be culturally sensitive, inclusive, and accessible. The Centre provides 6,000 to 7,000 hours of therapy annually and the sliding scale pay schedule means that no one is turned away. “Our goal has always been to empower people to take control of their lives and build healthier communities,” Boyd says.
