WINNIPEG, MB – Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg, will give a keynote address later this month to the Canadian Club of Winnipeg. On October 14, 2009, University of Winnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor, Lloyd Axworthy released a discussion paper aimed at recognizing community learning as a central pillar of post-secondary education in the 21st century.
“Community learning” recognizes the responsibility of the university to function in an accessible manner and to open itself up to the wide diversity of knowledge and experience represented within society. Community learning can make a difference in the life of a child, an adult learner, and in the resilience of our neighbourhood. UWinnipeg’s emerging community learning strategy shows that a university can use its basic mandate to meet contemporary social and economic issues through its own initiative, and set new paradigms for public policy. Dr. Axworthy will expand on his community learning and campus development vision, provide concrete examples of programs that are working and outline a process for how stakeholders including business, non-governmental organizations and community groups can get involved.
