Dr. James Currie, Provost and Vice-President, Academic is pleased to announce the appointment of Brett Lougheed as Director of the Oral History Centre. Mr. Lougheed is Acting Associate Dean of the Library, and has served as University Archivist and Digital Curator.

“Oral History is an important methodology, cutting across many university departments, and the Centre has supported researchers in History, Indigenous Studies, Modern Languages, Education, Kinesiology, and other areas. The OHC has an organic connection with our Archives, and supporting OHC staff and activities through the Library is a natural move,” said Lougheed.

Dr. Currie wishes to thank Dr. Alexander Freund, out-going Director of the Centre, for his excellent service in that role, and also Dr. Janis Thiessen, who served as Associate Director. According to Freund, “Placing the OHC in the domain of the University Archives and Library is an excellent move, and follows the model of Columbia University, where the modern North American oral history movement first began.”

Dr. Nolan Reilly, co-founder of the OHC with Freund notes “The decision to place the administration and operations of the OHC within the UW Archives is a most welcome one…  Kent (Davies) and Kim (Moore) are true experts in their field and will serve the OHC and the UW well over the years… This long term stability (the University has) brought to the OHC is greatly appreciated.”

The Oral History Centre offers training in advanced digital recording technologies, innovative digital storage solutions, and proven workflow strategies for oral history research, archiving, and dissemination. The Oral History Centre offers a program of local and international conferences, lecture series, workshops, institutes, and other events.
