As Canadians work to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, many leaders in the public, private and non-profit sectors are looking for effective strategies and insights. On June 19, Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg, moderated an open panel discussion that touched on reconciliation, identity, Indigenous knowledge, and relationships with the self, the land, and others.
Loretta Ross, Treaty Relations Commissioner of Manitoba and Derek Nepinak, CEO Kanata Financial and former Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, shared their insights on how leaders must initiate change in light of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
The event was held at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, presented in partnership with The University of Winnipeg. It served as the opening session for executive students attending a new, immersive program developed by UWinnipeg and the CMHR entitled Indigenous and Human Rights: An Executive Leadership Program. The six-day, immersive course includes presentations and discussions with Indigenous leaders, activists, educators and human rights scholars, exploration of relevant, interactive Museum exhibits for in-gallery learning, and first-hand perspectives from Indigenous peoples, including survivors of Indian Residential Schools.
