Building A Better Robot

Partnership with Winnipeg Technical College creates new opportunities for International students

WINNIPEG, MB – Up to 15 young adults from Korea, Japan, China and Mexico will arrive in Winnipeg this weekend to spend the month of July learning English and building robots at The University of Winnipeg. The new Robot Technology course will be taught by Winnipeg Technical College (WTC) instructor Bill Smart. It is a direct result of a partnership agreement signed by The University of Winnipeg and WTC in February to offer students more options in pursuing a blended academic and technical education.

Students will gain skills in programming and hardware by practical use of the robot. Specific courses include technology and teamwork, building an electronic circuit and using the robot to play games and perform tasks. All the students will live with Winnipeg families.

“The robotics course is significant because we know that many students today have an appetite to enhance their critical thinking skills with hands-on, applied training, and we are responding to that demand,” said Tammy Sigurdur, Director of UWinnipeg’s English Language Program. ”In the coming months we will be offering more joint programs with WTC for UWinnipeg students and for adults interested in augmenting their skills.”

Winnipeg Technical College delivers applied skills training for careers in Health Care and Human Services, Information and Business Technology, and Skilled Trades. Since the doors first opened in September 1985, the number and variety of programs courses, and services has grown to meet the needs of more than 12,000 full-time, part-time and Enterprise Services clients every year. http://www.wtc.mb.ca.
