WINNIPEG, MB – Four University of Winnipeg business students – Brandon Yestrau, Casey Gooch, Jiamin Liu and Liyang Sui – placed second in the case competition of the annual Gathering of Accounting Associates, Professionals and Students conference this past weekend. This was the first time The University of Winnipeg has participated in this competition.
An Opportunity to Meet Peers
Twelve teams from nine universities across Canada participated in the competition, held as part of a conference organized by The Asper School of Business Accounting Association. The annual conference is designed to provide students with an opportunity to meet peers from other universities, connect with the Manitoba business community and test their case analysis and presentation skills.
Other participating universities were The University of Manitoba, Lakehead University, the universities of Regina, Calgary, British Columbia and Windsor as well as Ryerson University and Assiniboine College.
Received a Trophy
The four University of Winnipeg students received a trophy and shared the $1,000 second prize. They also earned three hours of academic credit for their preparation for and participation in the competition through the Business Competition course taught by John Melnyk.
“These students are fine representatives of our program,” said Professor Melnyk. “Even though the competition was focused on accounting, to do so well they had to be able to relate financial issues to many other aspects of business, including ethics. That’s something we emphasize in the business program at The University of Winnipeg.”
The conference took place at Canad Inns Polo Park from Thursday, February 4 through Saturday, February 6, 2010. For more information please visit: http://www.umanitoba.ca/student/groups/asbaa/gaaps.html
