Former UWinnipeg Chair of biology, Dr. Edward Byard has earned the Canadian Council of University Biology Chairs ( CCUBC) 2014 Career Achievement Award thanks to his dedicated service to UWinnipeg. Recognition by ones peers in their field of study, is one of the highest honours that can be bestowed on an individual.
“I am thrilled that my colleagues in the CCUBC see my contributions as worthy,” expressed Byard. “This peer recognition is very important to me.”
Known for ‘getting things done’, Byard served as Chair for over a decade (2000-2014). His distinguished service is a result of his commitment to UWinnipeg as a leader and mentor to faculty and his students.
Byard also played an integral role in campus life and in governance. He served on the Board of Regents; Senate; as UWFA President; member of the Collective Bargaining and Economic Benefits committee; activist; as Chief Marshall at the UWinnipeg’s convocations and was one of the lead organizers of the annual Class Acts for six years. Incidentally, post retirement, Byard can still be heard in the hallways of Wesley Hall when he is playing in his blue grass band, Uptown Grass.
“We have benefited from some really high-quality Science Chairs, and I’m glad to see Ed getting this external recognition,” said Dr. James Currie, Dean of Science.
The Canadian Council of University Biology Chairs is comprised of the Chairs, or Heads of Biology Departments from most universities in Canada. Chairs play a key role in the leadership of Biology Departments and the improvement of Biology research and teaching in Canada. We strive to provide a forum for exchange of information between Chairs for improving Biology teaching and research in Canada.
