“Fundamentally, I think, graduate education teaches students to solve problems – to frame good questions, to research relevant contexts, to consider various solutions, and to communicate the results of their inquiries clearly. In the information age in which we live, these skills are transferable to many domains.” ~ Mavis Reimer, PhD, Dean of Graduate Studies
Only 18.6% of PhDs are employed as full-time university professors, and fewer still hold tenured or tenure-track positions. According to the Conference Board of Canada, more than three-fifths of PhDs are employed in diverse careers outside the academy—in industry, government, and non-government organizations—drawing on their skills as researchers and critical thinkers to improve policy, organizational performance, innovation, and economic and social well-being.
The University community is invited to learn what a graduate degree can do for you at UWinnipeg’s panel discussion on the Value of a Graduate Education on November 25, 2016, at 2:00 PM in Eckhardt-Grammaté Hall. Dr. Mavis Reimer, Dean of Graduate Studies, will facilitate the discussion with five UWinnipeg alumni who have pursued careers outside the traditional academic path.
The panelists include Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg; Dr. Jennifer Frain, CEO for New Directions for Children, Youth, Adults and Families; Dr. Barbara Doran, Administrative Officer for the Provost and Vice Provost Academic, UWinnipeg; Dr. Zbigniew Gryz, Sunlife Financial Advisor; and Dr. Stephen Borys, Director and CEO of the Winnipeg Art Gallery. This event will be followed by a reception.
We encourage you to RSVP to d.england@uwinnipeg.ca if you plan to attend, but drop-ins are welcome!
