First Nations artist and art administrator KC Adams will be speaking on Changing Perceptions at UWinnipeg on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at 7:00 pm in room 2M70. This event is free and open to the public.

Adams’ public art installation Perception, which appeared in Winnipeg in April 2015, challenges ingrained prejudice and is considered the most pointed political statement of her career.

Harrison Samphir in Canadian Dimension says, “Perception demonstrates the malleability of attitudes and the fragility of stigma. Its use of photographs, a medium central to our understanding of human faces and identity, serves an emotional and cognitive purpose: it allows one to transcend the shell of appearance and grasp the essence of others.” In Perception, Samphir continues, “the politics of representation, so often determined by external forces, the media, reports of crime and poverty, are flipped on their head.”

Adams has worked for decades as a sculptor, painter and multimedia creator — her pieces have appeared in many solo and group exhibitions throughout North America and Europe. Now based in Winnipeg, Adams graduated from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and her focus has been the investigation of the relationship between nature (the living) and technology (progress). She has been in numerous solo exhibitions, group exhibitions and was included in the PHOTOQUAI: Biennale des images du monde in Paris, France. She has  participated in national and international residencies and her work is in several collections including twenty works in the National Gallery of Canada. She was the set designer for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s Going Home Star: Truth and Reconciliation and a recent recipient of the City of Winnipeg’s Making A Mark Award.

This event is co-sponsored by several UWinnipeg departments including, Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications; Education; Indigenous Studies; and Master’s in Development Practice: Indigenous Development.
