David Bergen Featured at Writers Festival

Award-winning author to participate in Winnipeg International Writers Festival

WINNIPEG, MB – UWinnipeg alumnus and award-winning author David Bergen is one of the featured writers at the Winnipeg International Writers Festival. Bergen will take part in the Matinée at The Ralph Connor House: The Writers’ Gallery, to be held at 54 West Gate, Sun. Sept. 30 at 1:30 pm.

Bergen will be joined by local authors Lise Gaboury-Diallo and Chandra Mayor, who will read their own works. Also included in the event are snippets of works by Carol Shields, Gabrielle Roy and Margaret Laurence, along with 19 whimsical papier-mâché busts created by artist Susan Longmire of Canadian writers.

Bergen’s award-winning writing has left a literary splash at home and abroad. Among his list of honors is one of Canada’s most prestigious awards, the Giller Prize, which he won for The Time in Between in 2005.

The University of Winnipeg will recognize his contributions to the Canadian literary landscape with an Honorary Doctor of Letters Degree at a special convocation ceremony on Fri. Sept. 14. Bergen is one of nine people who will receive University of Winnipeg honorary degrees at this special convocation, which is part of the many exciting events at the 40th Anniversary Homecoming, Sept. 13-16, 2007.

Bergen is also one of several authors sharing and discussing their work at the UWinnipeg Authors event during Homecoming weekend. The session takes place on Sat. Sept. 15 at 2:00 pm in the Pitcairn Learning Commons and is hosted by UWinnipeg Bookstore and the Library.
