Dean of Libraries Heads West

Jane Duffy

WINNIPEG, MB – As Jane Duffy leaves her position as The University of Winnipeg’s Dean of Libraries this Friday, September 14, 2012 to tackle a new career challenge in Edmonton, the hum of state-of-the-art digital student workstations carries on. Duffy oversaw a major expansion of UWinnipeg’s Learning Commons which now encompasses the entire 4th floor of the Library, offering 40 additional student workstations including two smart-board equipped group study rooms.

While Dean, Duffy also strengthened services specifically to assist non-traditional students with their studies – UWinnipeg’s Library now has a full suite of freely accessible web-based podcasting services to help students with essay writing, academic integrity and project collaboration.

This year, UWinnipeg also launched the only full-service University Library Copyright office operating outside the tariff in Manitoba, building on in-house expertise. And also under Duffy’s guidance, the Eckhardt Grammate Library opened in 2010.

“I love The University of Winnipeg and will always treasure my experience here. What I enjoyed most about my three years here was the high level of energy, intelligence and creativity of our students,” said Duffy. “The success of the Library’s web-based and physical space initiatives since 2009 was a direct result of ongoing collaborations between our librarians and our students. I will always remember the students’ passion and commitment to the Library’s expansion of its electronic resources and services – not just for present UWinnipeg students, but for future ones as well. On a personal note, I have family in Edmonton, indeed all over Alberta, and I look forward to being closer to them.”

“The University of Winnipeg is embracing emerging technologies to provide today’s students with a contemporary library experience, blending the rich tradition of print-based knowledge with state-of-the art software,” said Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor. “Jane has been instrumental in helping us navigate this transition to better meet the needs of a plugged-in generation of learners.”

Duffy has accepted the position of Dean of Libraries at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton.

UWinnipeg is searching for a new Dean of Libraries.
