Dream, design + create. The University of Winnipeg hosted The Design It! Camp for kids. Children from the neighbourhood were invited to attend UWinnipeg’s Science Education in Engineering & Design (SEED) Camp led by Dr. Dawn Sutherland. Sutherland is the Canada Research Chair in Science Education in Cultural Contexts at UWinnipeg.
The one week camp allowed students in Grade 4-6 from two local schools to design and build a small structure that meets specific criteria and illustrates an important place in their own lives.
The week long camp introduced participants to the forces related to structures and electricity and student designs were required to include a frame and an electrical circuit. The design challenge also taught the children basic carpentry, electrical and engineering design skills in a fun and creative way. Every day the children were picked up from their home schools by a walking school bus and were served both breakfast and lunch daily thanks to a the generosity of Winnipeg Harvest. The four instructors at the camp were, Don Claudio, Lisa Kendel, Jenikka Lumbera and Kimberly Thomson education students at the University of Winnipeg.
