Distinguished Alumni Nominations Welcome

UWinnipeg Alumni Association Past Presidents Speakers Series Launched

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg Alumni Association is calling for nominations from the public for its annual naming of two distinguished alumni in 2012. Named at the Spring and Fall Convocations, the Award honours alumni of The University of Winnipeg who have made significant contributions in their fields and in their communities.

“It’s an opportunity for the alumni community to recognize the amazing achievements of one of their own,” said UWinnipeg Alumni Association President Chris Minaker. “The Association looks to recognize those who’ve made a big impact on those around them. Our previous winners have been people who have done this locally, nationally and internationally.”

Among others, previous winners of the award include: former Foreign Affairs Minister and current President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Winnipeg Lloyd Axworthy, former Premier Howard Pawley, director Guy Maddin, entertainer Fred Penner, journalist Lindor Reynolds and former Winnipeg Mayor Bill Norrie.

Anyone can nominate someone for this award. For more information, visit the Distinguished Alumni Award Page, e-mail alumni@uwinnipeg.ca or call 204-988-7118.

The Alumni Association is also launching its inaugural Past Presidents Speaker’s Series in support of student scholarships featuring last year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Winnipeg Free Press Editor Margo Goodhand.

“All of our Distinguished Alumni award winners are luminaries and have achieved something truly remarkable over their careers. The new speakers series is a great way for people to come and hear their insights and personal stories,” said Minaker.
