Do research!

The University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba jointly hosted the inaugural Early Career Researcher Day (ECRD)on campus, encouraging attendees to explore research. The event had over 100 participants from UWinnipeg, UManitoba, L’Université de Saint-Boniface, and Canadian Mennonite University.  ECRD brought emerging researchers together with experienced grant writers and funding experts to interactively demonstrate the research lifecycle.

“UWinnipeg is pleased to be a part of this event that brings early career researchers together from Manitoba’s post-secondary institutions to share, learn, and connect,” said Dr. Jino Distasio, UWinnipeg Vice-President, Research and Innovation. “Creating an environment that will allow for the exchange of ideas and information will provide critical resources for not only success for early career researchers, but also for building strong networks that will enhance the research ecosystem in Manitoba.”

Through information sessions, panels, and practical workshops, participants covered a wide range of topics, including funder mandates with a focus on the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Creating the tri-council of federal research-funding agencies promotes scientific discoveries and supports post-secondary research and training.

Panels included a variety of experts from SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR, industry (Mitacs), Research Manitoba, and faculty members who covered several topics, including ethics, knowledge mobilization, equity, diversity and inclusion, data management planning, community engagement, contracts, and publishing.
