DOTC First Nations Pavilion at UWinnipeg

The University of Winnipeg is partnering for the second year with the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council to present and host the DOTC First Nations Pavilion in The University of Winnipeg’s Pangea’s Kitchen (Riddell Hall), 385 Spence Street entrance, for the week of August 7 to 13, 2011.

Highlights of the pavilion include entertainment by Ray ‘Koko’ Stevenson and the renowned Walking Wolf Singers and Dancers who will showcase genres of Pow Wow dancing such as Grass Dance, Jingle Dress and Fancy Shawl to take the audience on a journey of rich tales, culture and experiences. UWinnipeg’s award winning Diversity Catering is cooking up traditional and contemporary cuisine including bison and vegetarian chili, elk burgers and smokies, bannock and jam, berry crumble and other specialties.

“UWinnipeg’s partnership with DOTC reflects our deep commitment to highlighting Indigenous scholarship, art and culture on campus,” said Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, UWinnipeg’s President and Vice-Chancellor. “As we reach out to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children and adults in Manitoba through our Community Learning programs, we are erasing the line between our campus and thethe community. The DOTC Folklorama pavilion is one more way for us to invite everyone to celebrate First Nations culture and visit The University of Winnipeg.”

“The DOTC First Nations Pavilion is about showcasing the talents, opportunities, pride and accomplishments of First Nations and Aboriginal peoples”, said Robert Daniels, CEO of the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council.  “It is about raising awareness of and appreciation for the rich culture, history and tradition of our people who have been habitants and stewards of this continent since time immemorial”.

DOTC Pavilion show times are:  Saturday and Sunday – 5:00, 6:45, 8:15, 9:45

Monday to Friday – 6:45, 8:15, 9:45

In addition to the shows there will be cultural displays in Riddell Atrium such as intricate beadwork and crafts.  The venue is air conditioned.
