The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kyle Devine as Dean of Graduate Studies, effective January 1, 2025. He will also hold a tenured appointment as Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Environmental Sciences.
Dr. Devine is currently Head of Research Training and Professor in the Department of Musicology at the University of Oslo. He previously worked at the University of Oxford and the City University of London, held visiting appointments at McGill University and the University of Melbourne, and studied in Canada and Scotland.
Over a period of ten years at the University of Oslo, Dr. Devine has held faculty and administrative positions in highly interdisciplinary graduate studies and research settings. He has led initiatives to increase levels of external research funding and has led curriculum development and implementation at all levels—including establishing a university-wide Master’s-level Honors Certificate in Environmental Humanities and Sciences. He has contributed to increasing levels of external research funding and research partnerships, including from the Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe scientific research initiatives at the University of Oslo. He was also instrumental in the comprehensive redesign of doctoral education in the Faculty of Humanities.
He assisted in drafting his department’s statement on diversity and inclusion and continues to work with Oslo’s wider musical community on these issues. He has also taught numerous courses and supervised dozens of theses.
Dr. Devine is an award-winning author and editor of books on the political economy and political ecology of culture. His next book is about how the music industries are transforming themselves in response to climate crisis. It will be published by Verso in 2025. Dr. Devine is internationally recognized for his work on the environmental situation of music, featuring regularly in the media and serving in a number of advisory roles. For example, he is the Lead Expert in Greening the Music Industry at EarthPercent, a climate charity cofounded by Brian Eno.

The current Acting Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr. Manish Pandey, will resume his role as Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics on January 1, 2025. “I would like to thank Dr. Manish Pandey for having served as Acting Dean of Graduate Studies since 2022,” said Dr. Radia. “Over the past year, I very much enjoyed working with Dr. Pandey and appreciated his dedication, leadership, and commitment to the role.”
Looking ahead to 2025, Dr. Devine is thrilled to be joining The University of Winnipeg and the Faculty of Graduate Studies. He is especially looking forward to working with the UWinnipeg community on fostering student-centered graduate education and research.
