UWinnipeg’s Dr. Nathan Hall (education, kinesiology and applied health) is heading to to the emerald isle thanks to the James M. Flaherty Scholarship granted by the Ireland Canada University Foundation (ICUF). Hall will be at University College Cork (UCC) in Ireland for six weeks doing research with Dr. Fiona Chambers. They will be examining strategies to improve the inclusion of outdoor and alternative environments in Canadian and Irish physical education programs.

“I am extremely excited and honoured to have been selected as a recipient,” said Hall. “I will be traveling to Ireland to complete this work during my research leave in the 2018 winter term. To visit another country and work at an esteemed institution alongside someone in my field whose reputation is so highly regarded is definitely a rare opportunity.”

Chambers is a Senior Lecturer and the Director of Sports Studies and Physical Education at UCC. She is a reviewer for twelve international journals and is on the Board of Trustees for the Association Internationale des Ecoles Superieure d’Education Physique. She is also the Chair of Physical Education Teacher Education Ireland.

The ICUF awards a range of scholarships to both Irish and Canadian scholars and academics whose research contributes to the academic and cultural links between Canada and Ireland. The James M. Flaherty Scholarship Program, initiated in 2016, supports both emerging and established scholars, from across all academic disciplines. Scholarships are awarded to candidates of the highest calibre, whose work relates to both Irish and Canadian interests, and provides the potential to develop ongoing international links in that area.
