West Broadway Youth Outreach Dreams Program Participants
A small group of youth from the West Broadway Youth Outreach Dreams career mentorship program spent the day at The University of Winnipeg to get an up-close look at possible career and education opportunities for the future. The group of inner city students toured labs in the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, took in a physics demonstration and met with faculty before shooting hoops in the Duckworth Centre.
Dreams is a career mentorship program that provides youth with the opportunity to explore the infinite possibilities their future holds and supplies them with the tools to get there. Program coordinator Rowan Gray says Dreams fulfills an important need. “It creates a personalized cheerleading team for the youth, to let them know anything they want to achieve is possible,” she says, adding the tour of UWinnipeg’s Campus was a wonderful and eye-opening experience for participants.
11 year old Rofiat Agboola is in her second year of the Dreams Program. She says she wants to become a doctor because she likes helping people, and to follow in the successful footsteps of former West Broadway Youth Outreach members who have already graduated medical school.
Rofiat was fascinated by some of what she saw during today’s tour, and had an easy time picking out her favourite sight on campus. “The skeletons,” she says, smiling. “We saw different types of animal skeletons and it was really cool.”
The West Broadway Youth Organization’s mission is to provide a safe, fun and caring environment where children are provided opportunities to learn and grow. Free structured programming and positive role models instill a sense of accountability, teach life skills, encourage positive behaviours and support children towards achieving their infinite potential.
