WINNIPEG, MB –Hailing from Dominion City, first-year business student Dylan Kreitz, has received The University of Winnipeg’s Garnet Kyle Scholarship, based on his excellent grades and strong community ties. Kreitz was the valedictorian at his high school graduation, received the Governor General’s Award, and earned top marks in four of his courses in high school.

The unique scholarship is specifically intended to support a rural student from Dominion City (and surrounding area) in the pursuit of undergraduate or graduate studies at UWinnipeg. It may be used to cover direct education costs and living costs. The scholarship is valued at $40,000 ($10,000 X 4 Years), and is the highest-valued scholarship offered to a Canadian student at UWinnipeg.

“This scholarship has made a difference,” shared Kreitz. “Now I can focus on my studies and transition from high school to university without the burden of financial strain. I enjoy UWinnipeg’s small class sizes and the professors know my name, which has also helped during this time of adjusting to my new city life.”

The late Garnet Kyle was a lifelong resident of Dominion City, longtime Councillor in the RM of Franklin, and school board trustee in the Boundary School Division. Kyle spent all of his life in local politics and ran as a candidate in the 1973 provincial election. He was active in many community projects including construction, at his own expense, of a nine-hole golf course in Dominion City that is free to youth in the area.

“To be involved in something that affects the youth of our area in such a positive way is exactly what Mr. Kyle was about,” expressed Dave Wolfe, Trustee of the Garnet Kyle Estate. “We anticipate the future benefits to our community because of the vision of men like him.”

This is an entrance scholarship awarded to a student coming from Roseau Valley High School in Dominion City, or a high school within the Border Land School Division, or a high school within the Hanover School Division, or a student who has graduated from one of these schools within the past three years. Applicants must have a 90% admission average or higher. This award is renewable for an additional three years.
