WINNIPEG, MB – The UWinnipeg 2009 Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Distinguished Lecture, features eminent Métis author Maria Campbell on Thursday, March 12, at 7:00 pm in Convocation Hall. Her Lecture, Road Allowance as Muse: Identity and Place is free and open to the public. This annual lecture is followed by a reception.
Accomplished Artist & Cultural leader
Campbell is an accomplished artist and cultural leader. She is a novelist, playwright, film producer, director and elder. Her book Halfbreed is an important document on racial relations in Canada and inspired many First Nation people to become writers. Campbell has earned three honorary doctorates, the Distinguished Canadian Award, the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, the Molson Award from the Canada Council for the Arts, a Chalmers Award for Best New Play and a Dora Mavor Moore Award.
As the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence, Campbell has an office in the English Department at UWinnipeg (Room 2M69) and she will be on campus until the end of April assisting writers with their craft.
Cultivating Emerging Writers
Carol Shields was known for cultivating emerging writers, mentoring students and members of the writing community and the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Program continues this legacy. Campbell’s residency has been made possible by the Carol Shields family, the Louis Riel Institute and the Canada Council for the Arts.
