Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor, announces preliminary enrolment numbers at his annual State of the University Address
WINNIPEG, MB – Preliminary enrolment numbers show more students than ever before are choosing to study at The University of Winnipeg with a 3.6% increase in undergraduate enrolment compared to this time last year and a surge in Aboriginal student applications, up 24% this September over last. Approximately 12% of the total student population is now Aboriginal, making UWinnipeg one of the top universities in Canada for Indigenous participation.
“In the past several years, UWinnipeg has worked hard to create programs and facilities that build on our reputation for academic excellence and relevance,” said Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg. “We have also made it our mission to reach out to non-traditional students, adult learners and Indigenous students, offering increased financial and social supports such as family townhouse living on campus and a pristine new daycare centre. Our Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, newly opened this September, is among the finest in North America. We have attracted the best and most committed faculty in the country. We are proud and gratified that students, and particularly First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students are responding by making UWinnipeg their university of choice.”
UWinnipeg is now attracting 13,600 people downtown – full and part-time students, adult learners, high school Collegiate students, faculty and staff.
OVERALL ENROLMENT AT A GLANCE
- UNDERGRADUATE: As of September 1, 2011, UWinnipeg had registered 9,519 full and part time undergraduate students in 30,412 full course enrolment equivalents. Both of these numbers are up significantly from last year at this time, the student total by 3.6% and the course registrations by 3.4%. Undergraduate enrolment increases have reached double digits in just 3 years, up 12.1% since 2008.
- GRADUATE: As of September 7, 2011, UWinnipeg had registered 484 graduate students in 14 Master degree programs including five new degrees: Master of Arts in Cultural Studies; Master of Arts in Indigenous Governance ; Master of Science in Applied Computer Science and Society; Master of Science in Bioscience, Technology and Public Policy and Master’s in Development Practice – Indigenous Development.
- ADULT LEARNERS – DIVISION OF CONTINUING EDUCATION: As of September 1, 1,014 adults were enrolled in UWinnipeg’s continuing education programs, with that number expected to double by March as each program has differing start dates. DCE students take an average of six courses annually.
- COLLEGIATE – As of September 7, the Collegiate had 418 students enrolled. UWinnipeg is the only university in Canada with a high school on campus, with students from grade 9 to grade 12. It also includes the innovative Model School which provides individualized learning plans to students referred by the community.
