Extraordinary Faculty Members to be celebrated at Spring Convocation

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is pleased to honour four outstanding faculty members at upcoming Spring Convocation ceremonies on June 11th and 12th, 2014.

The Erica and Arnold Rogers Award for Excellence in Research and Scholarship

(two recipients)

Catherine Taylor, PhD

Dr. Catherine Taylor is widely known for work on sexual and gender diversity and social justice within education. She has served as Principal Investigator of several large-scale research projects actively supported by virtually all schools system organizations in Canada, including the first-ever national survey on homophobia and transphobia in Canadian schools in partnership with Egale Canada Human Rights Trust, and the Every Teacher project on LGBTQ inclusive education in partnership with The Manitoba Teachers Society. Taylor is also a dedicated mentor to a significant number of students, providing important training in research methods for emerging scholars.

Pradeep Atrey, BTech, MS, PhD

Dr. Pradeep Atrey’s research contributes at the international level in the constantly-evolving area of security and privacy in technology. Designing privacy loss models and techniques to preserve the privacy of people, Atrey is developing algorithms and frameworks for state-of-the-art surveillance systems.  He has also contributed in the areas of multimedia security (video authentication and sharing), cloud-based privacy-enabled social networking, and secure computation of multimedia data in medical and surveillance applications.

Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence

Serena Keshavjee, BA, MA, PhD

Assistant Professor and Coordinator of History of Art Serena Keshavjee has earned the highest praise from her students, consistently described as an “exceptional, genuine professor.” She is renowned for her contagious passion for art. Keshavjee is a mentor who consistently goes beyond the call of duty to help her students with their education. Her engaging lectures and courses are constantly sought out by a cross-discipline of students. “I love going to class” is a common refrain of her pupils. Keshavjee also helped develop the new Masters in Cultural Studies: Curatorial Practices program.

The Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance

Michael Collins McIntyre, BA, PhD.

Shortly after being appointed Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department in 1975, McIntyre served as Assistant Dean from 1978 to 1982, and as Dean of Arts and Science from 1982 to 1992, which at the time encompassed virtually the entire University. He notes that continuing to pursue research and teaching while serving as Dean allowed him to be “of” rather than “from” the faculty, contributing to collegial problem solving. Among his many accomplishments, McIntyre established UWinnipeg’s Centre for Academic Writing, developed an accessibility program for those with physical disabilities, and fostered research capacity in the sciences.

Spring Convocation takes place June 11th and 12th, 2014.
