A play about a family limping out the door in the morning and coming home no matter what is closing The University of Winnipeg’s theatre season.
From Up Here, written by Liz Flahive and guest directed by 2021 Johanna Protege winner Aaron Jan, features the Department of Theatre and Film’s graduating Honours IV: Acting Class delivering in-person performances at the Asper Centre for Theatre and Film.
This award-winning coming-of-age story is Flahive’s first play. It follows the Barrett family as they try to recover from the unthinkable. Originally produced at the Manhattan Theatre Club in 2008, From Up Here was nominated for the 2008 Drama Desk Award for New Play and won the John Gassner Award for Playwriting by the Outer Critics Circle.
“Liz Flahive has written a beautifully rich coming-of-age play about non-closure and the impossibility of truly healing from trauma,” said Jan. “My vision of the show is to realize this on an epic, surreal scale, diving into the dreams and fantasies of our troubled protagonists and realizing them in full colour onstage. I’m interested in exploring the magic in the show. That feeling of being alone as a young person in suburbia, but discovering those rare moments of connection.”
From Up Here is a production entirely designed, crewed, and performed by senior theatre students, including a set full of secrets designed by Julia Anderson, costumes by A. Viatrox, and lighting by Anika Binding. The show features Isabella Lischka, Eve Ross Moore, Nicolas James Firth, Carly Bell, Woo Jun Lim, Madison Chevrefils, Liam Dutiaume, and Jonah Hordeski as Kenny.
The show runs from Tuesday, April 4 to Saturday, April 8 at 7:30 pm each evening. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended. For more information, please visit UWinnipeg’s Department of Theatre and Film website or call the 24-hour reservation line at 204.786.9152.
