Five brilliant Métis artists honour Michif culture and knowledge systems while forging new artistic trajectories through their exquisite, beaded creations in Gallery 1C03’s upcoming exhibit Beading Métis Resurgence, that runs from Thursday, February 12 to April 17, 2026.

Beading Métis Resurgence, is an exhibition and robust series of free public events or “activations” that expand the practice of and critical discourse around contemporary Red River Métis beadwork, an artform that until recently has not received due regard.

Curated by Gallery 1C03 Director/Curator Jennifer Gibson and University of Winnipeg Associate Professor of History, Dr. Cathy Mattes, this exhibition features artists Jennine Krauchi, David Heinrichs, Vi Houssin, Claire Johnston and Brianna Oversby.

Beading Métis Resurgence honours Krauchi’s legacy as a matriarch who has guided the resurgence of Métis beadwork by creating magnificent pieces seen in national and international museums and exhibits.

The show also makes evident Krauchi’s intergenerational mentorship and collaboration with remarkable bead workers Heinrichs, Houssin, Johnston and Oversby.

Dr. Mattes adds that “while each of these contributing artists has developed a unique voice through their beadwork creations, they all hold deep knowledge of and respect for ancestor art, the ability to beautifully share stories visually, a love for materiality, rigorous experimentation with materials, and a commitment to being in relation with each other via reciprocal beaded love.”

There will be an opening reception for the exhibition at Gallery 1C03 on Thursday, February 12, 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
