Helping students attend university

Everyone is invited to attend an important fundraising dinner to help students continue their studies. On Tuesday, April 12, 2011, Winnipeg City Councillor, UWinnipeg Alumna and Honourary Chair Devi Sharma hosts the Second Annual I Heart UWinnipeg Dinner, at Canad Inns Polo Park in the Main Ballroom. Cocktails are at 6:00 p.m. and dinner is at 7:00 p.m.

All proceeds support The University of Winnipeg’s Opportunity Fund as well as Wesmen athletic and Alumni scholarships.

The Opportunity Fund, unique in Canada, supports First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, new Canadians and refugees, war-affected youth and students from inner-city neighbourhoods by offering fast-track bursaries to youth like Anna Wall.

“I have a son who is 10 months old and I decided to continue my education because of him.

The Opportunity Fund gave me the chance to attend University on short notice,” said Wall, a 24 year-old First Nations student studying for a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies, Forest Ecology. “The Opportunity Fund was an immense help, covering all my courses and textbooks, which was in the range of $4,000.”
