WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg welcomes Dr. Michael B. Percy of the University of Alberta as interim Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, effective November 15, 2011. Dr. Percy will provide leadership and direction to one of the fastest growing faculties on campus while a search is underway for a permanent Dean, which is expected to be completed by July 2012.

With the coming departure of Dr. Michael Benarroch, UWinnipeg is moving forward to ensure a smooth and effective transition for both Faculty and students in Business and Economics. In this acting role, Dr. Percy will oversee the continued growth and enhancement of the Faculty of Business and Economics including completing the search for a Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Economics in support of the new Master of Arts in Sustainable Resource Development, as well as making three new faculty appointments in Business in the following areas: Marketing; Ethics and Human Resources; and International Business. He will work to deepen the relationship between the Faculty and the business community both in Winnipeg and across Canada.

A wealth of experience

Dr. Percy brings nearly 30 years of experience as an economist and academic leader to this temporary post. Having served most recently as Dean of the Alberta School of Business from 1997 to 2011, he is the author and co-author of four books and numerous articles on public policy, international trade and economic development. Dr. Percy has served on the editorial boards of the Canadian Journal of Economics and also Forest Science and has been an active commentator on current public policy issues. He is also active as a guest speaker and has taught in a number of professional development programs.

From 1993 to 1997, Dr. Percy took academic leave and served one term as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, and as Liberal Party Finance Critic. He served as co-chair of the Premier’s 1997 Economic Growth Summit, and is also a past President of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Percy has participated in several health care funding review panels for the province of Alberta and acted as a consultant to various provincial governments and United Nations agencies on issues related to trade and economic development.

Dr. Percy received his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Victoria and his Master of Arts (Economics) and Doctoral degree (Economics) from Queen’s University.
