The University of Winnipeg presents the Bonnycastle Lecture entitled The Manitoba Metis Land-Claims Decision and the Story of Winnipeg’s Early Years given by Justice Thomas Berger on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Convocation Hall.

Justice Berger represented the Manitoba Metis Federation in the latest land-claims case and will be introduced by David Chartrand, President of the Manitoba Metis Federation.  The Supreme Court ruled that the “federal government was ‘ineffectual and inequitable’ in how it handed out land to Métis children in Manitoba more than 130 years ago” in its ruling in favour of the Metis.

A display of Metis culture by The Louis Riel Institute will be open to the public in Convocation Hall starting at 6:00 pm.

The Bonnycastle Lecture is possible due to the Bonnycastle Endowment and also with support from Dr. Evelyn Peters, Canada Research Chair in Inner-City Issues, Community Learning, and Engagement, and from Jennifer Rattray, Associate VP Indigenous, Government and Community Affairs.
