WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg congratulates one of its most dedicated staff members, Kevin Chief, for winning last night’s Future Leaders of Manitoba Award in the category of Community Service.

Chief is a role-model and advocate for Winnipeg inner-city children and youth and is an inspirational Coordinator of UWinnipeg’s Innovative Learning Centre team. The team has developed and offers innovative programs aimed at closing the graduation gap. The programs offered are grounded in the philosophy of connecting elementary and secondary students to their school community so that youth stay in class, with the hope that each child will see himself or herself graduate and become a university student. Highly successful programs include Eco-Kids summer camps, the after school Eco-Kids on Campus program and an Enviro-Tech course for high school students. Hundreds of Winnipeg children have been touched by these programs.

Chief grew up in the inner-city, attended UWinnipeg and was offered a basketball scholarship. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and is currently working on his Masters of Arts degree in Education.
