UWinnipeg’s Gupta Faculty of Kinesiology and Applied Health presents KINect Research Week beginning on Monday, October 29, 2019. The week concludes with KINect Symposium on Friday, November 2, 2018. The week includes talks on a range of subjects that highlight kinesiology as an academic field of study at the University of Winnipeg and features a the broad spectrum of research.
The week includes a keynote lecture from Dr. Wesley O’Brien, from University College Cork (UCC), Ireland on Putting Physical Literacy on the map with Irish children and youth on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at 12:30 pm in Leatherdale Hall.
O’Brien is an expert in childhood movement and physical activity promotion. He is currently supervising postgraduate research in the fields of physical education, well being, motor competence, childhood physical activity, physical literacy and sport participation. O’Brien is a member of the Executive Board for the Physical Education Association of Ireland (PEAI), is a visiting scholar at The University of Winnipeg, and is UCC’s Physical Education committee member for the University’s ‘Community Engagement Strategic Plan.
UWinnipeg’s Dr. Nathan Hall (education, kinesiology and applied health), made a connection with O’Brien this past year when he was in Ireland doing research at UCC as the 2018 James M. Flaherty Scholar. O’Brien was very interested in Hall’s research regarding the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy Report.
The two will be working on developing various research collaborations related to physical literacy assessment. While he is here, O’Brien will visit Harrow School in Winnipeg to observe a few Canadian physical education classes with future plans for collaboration between UCC and UWinnipeg.
O’Brien is coming to UWinnipeg thanks to a UWinnipeg Partnership Development grant.
