Level up your skills and connections at Research Week

Research Week events are open to everyone, no registration required.

The breadth and depth of research expertise at The University of Winnipeg will be on full display during Research Week 2025.

This four-day interactive event series, organized by the Research Office, returns to campus November 18-21. All events are free and open to everyone, no registration required.

“Research Week brings our community together to explore ideas and celebrate discovery,” said Dr. Jitendra Paliwal, Vice-President, Research and Innovation.

We are laying the groundwork for the next generation of innovation and research excellence.

Always innovating, Research Week features several new elements this year, as well as favourites from years past.

Research Week events are designed to help researchers at any stage of their studies or career grow and develop their skills, knowledge, and connections as they journey the path to research success.

Visit the Research Week homepage for the full lineup of events. All events take place in Room 2M70 (2nd floor, Manitoba Hall) unless otherwise noted.

Professor pursues world record

This year’s Canada Research Chair Speaker Series will feature Dr. Jeff Martin, Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Fundamental Symmetries in Subatomic Physics.

Dr. Martin and his team at TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator centre, are pursuing the world record for ultracold neutron production, having already set the Canadian record.

Dr. Martin’s talk will kick off Research Week on November 18. He will recount his 14 years as a Canada Research Chair, including the development and evolution of his research program, which helped establish a new subfield of subatomic physics research in Canada.

Dr. Martin will also discuss the ups and downs he has faced as a researcher, and offer guidance to aspiring and early-career researchers who want to develop research programs that are sustainable and impactful.

Poster symposium celebrates 20 years

Research Week will also mark the 20th anniversary of the Randy Kobes Undergraduate Poster Symposium on November 19. This annual event, located in the atrium of the Richardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, features undergraduate students presenting posters on a wide range of scientific research interests. Judges will evaluate the entries that morning, followed by a public viewing in the afternoon.

Friday fun at Flipped 3MT

Professors will be in the hot seat during Flipped 3MT on November 21 in Leatherdale Hall.

This fun event inverts the format of the popular Three-Minute Thesis Competition. Faculty members will present their research in under 180 seconds using only a single, static presentation slide (and maybe some props and singing too).

Winners of the Poster Symposium will also be announced during Flipped 3MT.

Research Snapshots debut

A new event called 5×5 Research Snapshots will debut at this year’s Research Week.

Each 75-minute session—four on November 20 and one on November 21—will feature researchers in a given field delivering concise overviews of their research projects in just five minutes.

“By showcasing these diverse projects, we are inspiring new connections and laying the groundwork for the next generation of innovation and research excellence,” Dr. Paliwal said.

Each area of study—Applied Computer Science and Society, Applied Economics and Business Management, Criminal Justice, Cultural Studies, Environmental Studies and Sciences, Human Rights, Indigenous Studies—corresponds to a Faculty of Graduate Studies program, making Research Snapshots a can’t-miss event for undergraduate students interested in master’s level study.

A student and faculty researcher networking event and a student research panel discussion will round out the Research Week schedule. See the full event lineup and timetables on the Research Week homepage.
