This year’s competition, hosted by the University of Alberta, will take place virtually. The event will be livestreamed, and anyone from the UWinnipeg community who wants to attend and show their support for Meek can do so from the comfort of their home or office. The event is free but pre-registration is required.

“I am excited that I will get to represent The University of Winnipeg at this event,” said Meek. “I’m looking forward to hearing about all of the different research going on across Canada.”

Meek is studying toward a Master of Science in Bioscience, Technology, and Public Policy. She is working with Dr. Renée Douville to try to understand the link between endogenous retrovirus-K (ERVK) and neurodegeneration in motor neuron disease.

“I’ve always been fascinated with microbiology and it’s impact on human health and disease,” she said.

She won top prize at UWinnipeg’s 3MT competition in February 2020 for her presentation, Integrate me one more time…ERVK integrase as a source of DNA damage in neurodegerative disease.

“3MT is a great opportunity,” she said. “It ‘s a fun way to show other students what I have been working on while getting the chance to strengthen my public speaking skills.”

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition is a research communication competition that challenges students to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance in just three minutes using language that a non-specialist audience can understand.

The University of Winnipeg’s Faculty of Graduate Studies is encouraging everyone to join them in supporting Meek as she participates in the 3MT Western Regional Finals Livestream
