The University of Winnipeg congratulates all the participants in the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium (MSSS). These inventive young minds from grades 4 – 12 are the future of science research in Canada. UWinnipeg’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics would like to make a special mention to the winners of the two UWinnipeg awards sponsored by the department, Rayan Roy, a Grade 10 student from Kelvin High School; and Bronwyn Delacruz, a Grade 12 student from the University of Winnipeg Collegiate. Each prize was worth a $100 and UWinnipeg gift bag.

“We would also like to encourage these talented students to come to the UWinnipeg and study math or statistics!  We were very impressed by the high calibre of the projects at MSSS,” shared Associate Professor Dr. Anna Stokke (mathematics) and one of the UWinnipeg judges. “Our department established the award to encourage more students to consider doing projects that involve mathematics or to include statistical analysis in their scientific projects,”

To be considered for the UWinnipeg prize the student must be in high school and the project must have a mathematics theme or involve an in-depth use of statistical analysis.  The contenders were judged by UWinnipeg faculty members Dr. Ross Stokke, Dr. Melody Ghahramani, Dr. Zeinab Mashreghi and Dr. Anna Stokke.

The Manitoba Schools Science Symposium (MSSS) is the largest annual science event held for students throughout Manitoba. For a list of all the winners please visit MSSS.
