Two brand-new research funding opportunities have been established at The University of Winnipeg to advance the work of faculty who are making exceptional contributions in their field.

The new Chancellor’s Research Excellence Chair and Chancellor’s Emerging Research Award will replace the existing Chancellor’s Research Chair, giving UWinnipeg faculty two avenues to pursue an internal research grant.

“The new Chancellor’s Research Excellence Chair and Chancellor’s Emerging Research Award highlight the importance of UW research excellence and its impact on our students and community,” said UWinnipeg Provost, Dr. Pavlina Radia. “It is important to celebrate our faculty’s research achievements. By acknowledging our faculty’s contributions, we mobilize research and advance societal goals more broadly.”

The Chancellor’s Research Chair has a lengthy history at UWinnipeg, having been awarded annually to a tenured faculty member since 2011. It has supported research excellence across a range of faculties, with past recipients representing the Arts, Sciences, Kinesiology and Applied Health, and Business and Economics.

The award has been granted to faculty who have excelled at research and scholarship, attracted and trained students, and conducted innovative, high-quality investigation – criteria that will remain as part of the two new awards.

“It has been so rewarding to see the impact of Chancellor’s Research Chair over the past decade plus,” said Dr. Jino Distasio, Vice-President, Research and Innovation. “Our Chairs have reflected the tremendous growth in research activity at the University of Winnipeg. With the inclusion of the Chancellor’s Emerging Award, this impact will deepen as we are now able to support and establish early career researchers in new and exciting ways.”

Previously, emerging researcher candidates were in competition with well-established faculty for the Chancellor’s Research Chair.

The new Chancellor’s Emerging Research Award, which is open to faculty members within 10 years of completing their PhD, will help ensure that up-and-coming researchers can compete for research funding. It will typically be awarded annually to an internal candidate for a term of one year, with a research grant award of $10,000.

The Chancellor’s Research Excellence Chair will be available to tenured faculty members who are well-established scholars with an exceptional record of research excellence. This award includes a research grant in the amount of $25,000 distributed over a three-year term.

The call for submissions is now out for both the Chancellor’s Research Excellence Chair and Chancellor’s Emerging Research Award. Details for each award can be found here. The deadline for proposals is April 1, 2024.
