WINNIPEG, MB – For the second consecutive year, new undergraduate students self-identifying as Indigenous comprise 12% of the student body, making The University of Winnipeg among the strongest in Canada for Indigenous participation. Preliminary enrolment numbers also indicate more international students are choosing UWinnipeg, up 13.5% over last year, with China, Nigeria, India and Germany being the primary countries of origin. Domestic enrolment remains relatively stable for fall 2016. UWinnipeg currently has 9,287 students enrolled, of which 232 are graduate students.
“One of our core missions at UWinnipeg is to attract and support a wide diversity of students, with a particular focus on those who have been under-represented in post-secondary institutions such as inner city students, adult learners with families, Indigenous and new Canadian students,” said Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg. “We consider this our greatest strength.”
Undergraduate students are registered for a total of 15,124 FCEs (full credit equivalents) similar to last year (15,425.) Approximately 75% of UWinnipeg undergraduate students attend full time.

When all UWinnipeg programs are combined (including the Collegiate high school, English Language Program, Professional, Applied and Continuing Education students, and the new Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts on campus) UWinnipeg attracts more than 14,000 people to Winnipeg’s downtown and West End daily.
The 2016 English Language Program has 212 students enrolled. Professional, Applied and Continuing Education (PACE) has 149 new full time students for fall 2016, (which includes 75 international students). Additionally, approximately 2,500 students take part-time classes at PACE annually.
Final enrolment numbers will be available in November.
NOTE: In the past, UWinnipeg has referenced having approximately 10,000 students. This remains true, as over the course of an academic year we have 10,000 unique students take courses at our institution. Some of these students take courses only in the Fall Term, and some take courses only in the Winter Term. This news release looks at students who are currently registered for Fall Term courses. We made this change to our reporting structure last year in order to be more consistent with the Canadian standard. Most institutions report data using these parameters, which make comparisons more accurate.
