New – Master of Arts in Environmental, Resource and Development Economics

WINNIPEG, MB – What is the economic impact of climate change? Must we sacrifice the environment to develop our economies? Can natural resources be developed sustainably? Is there a tradeoff between inequality and economic growth? What is the role of agriculture in poverty reduction?

These are some of the important questions that will be investigated in the new Master of Arts in Environmental, Resource and Development Economics at The University of Winnipeg, whose classes begin this September 2012. This one-year program will provide an opportunity for students to analyze how social, environmental and economic issues intersect, both at the local and global levels.

Professional economists with strong analytical skills and practical knowledge of sustainable development are in growing demand by employers in the public, private and nongovernmental sectors.

The Master of Arts in Environmental, Resource and Development Economics (ERDE) will allow students to acquire competency in economic analysis, while also providing them with the chance to apply this knowledge to issues affecting low-income communities and the environment. In addition to core courses in economic theory and quantitative methods, students will take field courses in economics and related disciplines, and can complete a research project in environmental, resource or development economics.

“This new Masters degree builds on UWinnipeg’s unique mission to provide students with relevant academic programs that give them interdisciplinary skills to tackle the most challenging problems of our time,” said Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor. “We now offer a suite of distinct graduate programs in diverse fields including the arts, sciences, theology and Indigenous development and economics. We offer our students unparalleled research opportunities that have real-life applications.”
