WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) in the Discovery Grants Program, NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships, and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships.

For 2010, UWinnipeg will be receiving a total $194,000 in new Discovery Grants, allowing research projects to begin that range from Anthropology to Psychology and all the sciences in between.

“We are pleased and excited to be getting these funds to help us further our research objectives,” said Dr. Sandra Kirby, Associate Vice-President (Research) and Dean of Graduate Studies. “These grants promote and support our research abilities. We are proud to contribute to Canada’s pool of expert research, fostering excellence and providing a stimulating environment for our students and faculty. We are delighted with the research capacity of our undergraduate and graduate students, along with our faculty members.”

In addition, UWinnipeg received a Subatomic Physics Discovery Grant totaling $451,000 over three years.

Doctorate Worth $105,000
Joel Jameson, a UWinnipeg Master’s student in the BioScience, Technology and Public Policy program received an NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctorate worth $105,000 for 3 Years. Five students received the NSERC Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s level each worth $17,500 (Stephanie Armstrong, Kaleigh Norquay, Daniel Kozera, Chen-Yi Liu, Michelle Sylvia and Joan Di Nella) and one NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship – Master’s level worth $17,300 (Chrissy Chubala).

Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships and NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships provide financial support to high-calibre scholars who are engaged in Master’s or Doctoral programs in the natural sciences or engineering.

Discovery Grants support ongoing programs of research for faculty (with long-term goals) rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances, whether made individually or in teams.

NSERC is a federal agency aimed to help make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators to the benefit of all Canadians. The agency supports some 28,000 students and post-doctoral fellows in their advanced studies. The Council promotes discovery by funding more than 11,800 professors every year and fosters innovation by encouraging more than 1,500 Canadian companies to participate and invest in post-secondary research projects.
