The University of Winnipeg received research funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) that totals close to $4,600,000 in numerous grants that will enable 12 talented UWinnipeg researchers from across disciplines in a variety of projects.

This funding includes several cooperative research grants with Principal Investigators at other Canadian universities as UWinnipeg co-applicants researchers work together to find answers in the social sciences and humanities.

Five UWinnipeg researchers received Insight Grants as the Principal Investigator that cover a range of topics that total over $600,000.

They include Dr. Olya Bryksina (Business and Administration) – Motivating individual efforts in pursuit of group-level goals; Dr. Jason Hannan (Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications) – Reactionary Speech: The Rhetoric of Conservatism; Dr. Melanie O’Gorman (Economics) – How Important are Water and Sanitation? Investigating the Associations between Water/Sanitation and Well-being in First Nations in Manitoba; Dr. Aileen Friesen (History/Mennonite Studies) – Through a Gendered Red Gate: Mennonites and Mass Migration from the Soviet Union; Dr. Kelly Gorkoff (Criminal Justice) – Public Inquiries and the Role of the State in Canadian Criminal Justice.

The following UWinnipeg researchers are co-applicants in a variety of SSHRC grants that promote cooperative research and knowledge mobilization that were announced earlier this summer.

This includes Dr. Jino Distasio for the Partnership Grant, The Canadian Observatory on Homelessness – Mobilizing Partnerships to Prevent and End Homelessness project with York University; and Dr. Sheri-Lynn Skwarchuk for the Partnership Development Grant, Assessment and Intervention for Mathematics (AIM) project with Carleton University.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is the federal research funding agency that promotes and supports post-secondary-based research and research training in the humanities and social sciences.

The University of Winnipeg gratefully acknowledges the funding received from the Government of Canada Research Support Fund in aid of research infrastructure.  Every year, the federal government invests in research excellence in the areas of health sciences, engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities through its three granting agencies. The Research Support Fund (RSF) reinforces this research investment by helping institutions ensure that their federally funded research projects are conducted in world-class facilities with the best equipment and administrative support available.
