Professor Dr. Zbigniew Izydorczyk
The University of Winnipeg’s Faculty of Arts is pleased to announce that English professor Dr. Zbigniew Izydorczyk has been invited to be a visiting scholar by the École normale supérieure (ENS) in Paris, France, as part of the program Labex TransferS.
“This is a very prestigious international posting,” expressed Fiona Green, Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts. “Zbigniew is an ideal ambassador to share his expertise and scholarship with a new audience. His new colleagues at ENS include some of the most distinguished intellectuals and scientists of our time.”
Izydorczyk is a medievalist specializing in the reception and transmission of apocrypha during the Middle Ages. He has published books on the surviving manuscripts of the Gospel of Nicodemus and other New Testament apocrypha, and on their circulation and use during the medieval period; he has also edited a Latin version of the Gospel of Nicodemus from a fifteenth-century manuscript.
During his stay at the École normale supérieure in May 2014, Izydorczyk will deliver four two-hour lectures exploring the challenges of studying large manuscript traditions, the survival of ancient texts of the Gospel of Nicodemus into the later Middle Ages, the reemergence and spread of its vernacular translations, and its transfer from manuscripts into print.
The ENS is one of the oldest and most prestigious French institutions for advanced undergraduate and graduate training and for research in all key disciplines of the humanities and sciences. Its professors have included some of the most eminent French intellectuals and scientists (Althusser, Becket, Derrida, Lacan) and several of its alumni have been awarded Noble Prize (Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, Foucault, Césaire).
