Violations of rights, refugee families living in overcrowded conditions, bedbug and mice infestations, illegal rooming houses –some of the challenges facing vulnerable low-income people in Winnipeg today. These struggles and innovative responses are documented in a new book: Poor Housing: A Silent Crisis, a compilation of 15 new research projects on low income housing issues in Winnipeg.
Poor Housing: A Silent Crisis is edited by Josh Brandon and Dr. Jim Silver and co-published by Fernwood and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Manitoba. Josh Brandon is a Community Animator at the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg. Jim Silver is a professor and chair of the Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies at the University of Winnipeg.
This research was funded by the Manitoba Research Alliance through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Poor Housing: A Silent Crisis serves as the basis for an all-day community symposium on local housing issues and strategies for action. Report authors will present in the morning. In the afternoon, the Right to Housing Coalition will lead a session on how to engage with all levels of government in order to address the low income housing crisis facing Winnipeg and Manitoba. The event is open to the public and at the newly-renovated West End Commons, a church converted into rent-geared-to-income and affordable housing.
