Province Provides Boost to Students with Disabilities at UWinnipeg

Talking computers, interactive technology among new support for students

WINNIPEG, MB Students with disabilities at The University of Winnipeg now have access to talking computers and more adaptive technology equipment thanks to a generous grant of $55,800 from the Government of Manitoba through the Council on Post-Secondary Education (COPSE).

“Our government is committed to providing accessibility to post-secondary education for all Manitobans,” said the Honourable Diane McGifford, Minister of Advanced Education and Literacy. “By investing in the latest learning technology for students with disabilities, we are demonstrating this commitment at The University of Winnipeg.“

The new adaptive interactive technology includes voice recognition, screen magnification and screen reading software plus seven large print keyboards and a Braille labeler. Accessible furniture has been included in the upgrade consisting of study carrels and ergonomic chairs to allow for easy maneuvering creating a better study environment with improved comfort and accessibility.

“The University is committed to academic excellence that is inclusive for all students,” said UWinnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Lloyd Axworthy. “This generous grant brings adaptive technology to our students with disabilities creating an improved learning environment.”

UWinnipeg’s Disability Services facilitate and promote the ongoing development of an accessible learning environment which provides students with disabilities the opportunity to participate fully in all aspects of campus life.

“The new software will certainly be a huge plus for myself and other students using the DRC,” said UWinnipeg first year student Scott Best. “We will now be able to use a computer on campus to do our homework or to write tests and exams which was not possible before. This is definitely another step toward equality.”

COPSE is the provincial agency that works to promote excellence and cooperation within the post-secondary education sector to meet the diverse educational needs of Manitobans. The Council facilitates the coordination and integration of post-secondary services and facilities, reviews and approves university and college programming, develops policy, and promotes fiscal responsibility and accountability in the post-secondary system.
