WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg is excited to announce that the Queen Elizabeth Scholar – Advanced Scholars program has awarded UWinnipeg $390,721 to expand our international internship programs for post-doctoral fellows and early-career researchers that build on existing research and teaching collaborations among our faculty.
This new program will see the University of Winnipeg host 11 international post-doctoral fellows and early-career researchers over the next three years, along with sending three members of the University community to participate in international research collaborations abroad. This program will provide dynamic opportunities for post-doctoral and early career researchers from low and middle-income countries (LMIC) that will enhance their professional and research skills, while increasing engagement between Canadian and international scholars.
“As a mid-sized university, we maintain a collegial atmosphere that fosters formal and informal intellectual exchanges among academics and a range of partners,” said Dr. Jino Distasio, Vice-President, Research and Innovation, ”The diversity of research questions and issues being taken up by the scholars involved in this project present promising opportunities for dialogue and networking regarding social and environmental justice issues that would be difficult to accomplish with a more narrowly focused project.”
The five UWinnipeg research projects involved are: Environmental Justice in India and Canada; Maternal and Child Health in Indigenous Communities; Decolonizing Higher Education in Canada and South Africa; Transferability and Adoption of Innovations in Sustainable Agriculture; and the Prairie Climate Centre.
The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships (QES) is managed through a unique partnership of Universities Canada, the Rideau Hall Foundation (RHF), Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) and Canadian universities. The QES-AS is made possible with financial support from IDRC and SSHRC.
The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee International Scholars Program was launched in 2014 and aims to activate a dynamic community of young global leaders across the Commonwealth to create lasting impacts both at home and abroad through inter-cultural exchanges encompassing international education, discovery and inquiry, and professional experiences.
