In 2013, the Faculty of Arts created two awards to recognize excellence: one in teaching, and the other in research, scholarship, or creative activity. The inaugural awards were offered last year. The Faculty is happy and proud to announce its most recent winners.
The recipient of this year’s teaching award is Dr. Shauna MacKinnon, Assistant Professor in the Department of Urban and Inner-City Studies. Dr. MacKinnon is extremely valued as an instructor, both by her students and by her colleagues. She is very engaged in the classroom, encouraging respectful and inclusive debate, and gifted with a great sense of humour.
The recipients of the award for research, scholarship, or creative activity are Dr. Mary Jane McCallum, Associate Professor in the Department of History, and Mr. Tom Stroud, Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre and Film.
Mr. Stroud’s two full-length productions (September 5-6, 2014) of Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist play, No Exit, at the Asper Centre for Theatre and Film, was the second phase (of three) of a larger project which attracted funding from the Manitoba Arts Council, the Winnipeg Arts Council, The WH and SE Loewen Foundation, The Winnipeg Foundation and private donations.
Dr. McCallum’s single-authored, peer-reviewed monograph, Indigenous Women, Work and History, 1940-1980 (2014, University of Manitoba Press, 336 p.), is a groundbreaking work in Indigenous women’s and labour history and was nominated for two Manitoba Book Awards, the Alexander Kennedy Isbister Award for Non-Fiction and the Eileen McTavish Sykes Award for Best First Book.
